How Artsmark works

Artsmark has a common sense application process that is light on paperwork and flexible to each school.

Each school follows these steps to gain an Artsmark Award:

  • Register

Register your school or education setting by completing the short form on our website.

  • Undertake a Self-Assessment

Read our Self-Assessment document to find out about the criteria for each Artsmark level, Arts Council England’s Quality Principles and to gauge your schools current level of provision.

  • Attend a Development Day

Within one term of registering you should attend a Development Day with your local Bridge organisation. Here you will start to write your Statement of Commitment.

  • Write a Statement of Commitment

Use our Statement of Commitment template to tell us about your goals and objectives for Artsmark. Submit this to Arts Council England within one term of attending the Development Day.

  • Deliver and develop your goals

When your Statement of Commitment is accepted you have up to two years to deliver and develop your goals and objectives and submit a Case Study.

  • Get support from your Bridge organisation

Your local Bridge organisation offers support sessions on topics such as evidencing impact and writing your Case Study. Contact them to book a place.

  • Evidence and evaluate the impact

Look back at your Statement of Commitment, Self-Assessment, Quality Principles and the work you have done to evidence and evaluate the impact of Artsmark.

  • Write a Case Study

Use our Case Study template to reflect on the journey you have been on since submitting your Statement of Commitment and submit this to Arts Council England.

From January 2019, there will no longer be half-termly deadlines for submitting your Case Study.

You can submit your Case Study at any time within two years of submitting your Statement of Commitment.

  • Be awarded an Artsmark level

After submitting your Case Study, you will hear the outcome of your submission no later than the end of the following academic term. You can be awarded a Silver, Gold or Platinum Artsmark award which is valid for two years.

To maintain Artsmark status you should re-register before your award expires and start working towards your next award.

How long will the process take?

The Artsmark process is flexible to the needs of schools and to fit around school planning cycles.

Within one academic term of registering online you will attend a Development Day with the Bridge organisation in your area. After this you have one academic term to complete and submit your Statement of Commitment to Arts Council England.

Once this is accepted you have up to two years to deliver, develop and evaluate the goals and objectives set in your Statement of Commitment and submit a Case Study.

When you have achieved these goals and objectives and evaluated the impact of your work you will write a Case Study which should also be submitted to Arts Council England.  Your Statement of Commitment and Case Study will be assessed against our published criteria and you will be notified of the outcome no later than the end of the following academic term.

Your Artsmark Award is valid for two years, to maintain Artsmark status you should re-register before it expires and start working towards your next award.
